Description:
The collaborative team of Point Office and artist William Downs, joined by Lord Aeck Sargent, Shear Structural, Eberly Associates, Gabler Youngston Lighting, and Mills Specialty Metals has been selected to design a memorial to former Atlanta mayors Ivan Allen Jr. and Maynard Jackson in Woodruff Park, located in downtown Atlanta. The announcement comes at the conclusion of a design competition organized by Central Atlanta Progress and Atlanta Legacy Makers.

The design will include a reconfigured northern portion of Woodruff Park prioritizing universal accessibility and native plant species mimicking systems of Atlanta’s urban ecology. The memorial itself will consist of an elevated 50’ diameter concave ringed surface bearing on angled wall and column supports, it’s shape reacting to existing site conditions. The inside surface of the elevated ring will feature a mural by artist William Downs, while information associated with the mayor’s service to Atlanta will be inscribed in the lower potions of the memorial and embedded in the ground plane.
